Merry Christmas! I thought since I started this blog on Xmas, I should start with a Christmas song (since I'll have to wait another year for it to be socially acceptable to listen again).
I was looking through my iTunes of Xmas songs. I thought it wouldn't be appropriate to start with a song that everyone knew because everybody already has their own opinions on those songs. Plus you can't criticize a classic.
While I was supposed to be studying for finals this semester, I watched the Christmas at Rockefeller Center special on TV. I heard Mariah Carey was going to be singing and assumed that it would just be "All I Want For Christmas" which is a very good song if I do say so myself. Instead, I got to enjoy listening to Mariah rock out to her new song on her album Merry Christmas II You (get it? MC for Mariah Carey and the II for her second Christmas album. I thought it was pretty clever), "Oh Santa" with children dancing and singing in the background. I instantly loved the song. I thought it was so upbeat and was just great to sing along to... My friends had different opinions. "This is awful." "This will never be a christmas classic!" "She can never top her first Christmas album." "Turn this off!"
I wasn't surprised to hear these responses. I tend to like music that other people don't (hey, I'm obsessed with country and I'm not from the south!). I instantly downloaded "Oh Santa" and listened to it by myself (since no one else wanted to). I listened on repeat for a few days, memorizing the lyrics, and singing along. I just thought it was great, showing it to new people, but not getting much interest. Needless to say, I can't really stand the song anymore. You may think, well obviously you don't like it, you listened to it on repeat for multiple days. I really don't think that's it. It is a very upbeat song, but it doesn't represent the vocal chops we know and love from Mariah. It has no comparison to "All I Want For Christmas Is You" or her version (which I love) of "O Holy Night".
All in all, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I can't really decide at this point my true opinion of this song. I hate and I love it. It's great when you just want to sing along to something gospelly, but isn't the type of Christmas song you would sing to get yourself in the Christmas spirit. I think she would've had more success had she come out with this song with lyrics having nothing to do with Christmas, but that's just my opinion.
My rating: 5/10
Oh Santa- Mariah Carey
